CJ Hendry’s extraordinary Flower Market installation lands in Hong Kong for four days only \u2014 and the whole family is invited<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are moments, when travelling, that catch you completely off guard. You round a corner, or step through a door, and find yourself somewhere so unexpectedly beautiful that the ordinary business of the day simply stops. Hong Kong has always been good at producing those moments \u2014 in the geometry of its skyline, in the drama of its harbour at night, in the way the city seems to reinvent itself around every corner. This March, it is about to produce another one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
CJ Hendry’s Flower Market opens at AIA Vitality Park on Hong Kong’s Central Harbourfront on 19 March, and if you happen to be in the city \u2014 or if you are considering whether to be \u2014 it belongs at the very top of your itinerary. It is free to enter. It runs for four days. Every visitor takes a flower home. And it is, by any measure, one of the most visually extraordinary experiences available anywhere in Asia right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Flower Market is a large-scale immersive installation by CJ Hendry, an Australian contemporary artist whose work has been described, with some justification, as the most joyfully overwhelming art experience of its generation. The installation fills an entire architectural space \u2014 in this case, a beautiful greenhouse pavilion on the edge of Victoria Harbour \u2014 with more than 150,000 plush flowers spanning 26 distinct designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The flowers are oversized, vibrantly coloured and extraordinarily detailed. The space they create is unlike anything else: saturated with colour, alive with texture, and possessed of a dreamlike quality that visitors of all ages \u2014 from the very young to the very well-travelled \u2014 consistently find impossible to resist. Previous editions, staged in New York, drew visitors from around the world. Hong Kong’s edition is the first in Asia, and all the indications are that it will be the most talked-about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
CJ Hendry grew up in Brisbane, Australia, and is now based in New York. She first came to widespread attention through her hyperrealistic drawings \u2014 works in ballpoint pen so precisely rendered that most people, seeing them for the first time, simply refuse to believe they are drawings at all. The videos she posted of the drawings being made attracted tens of millions of views worldwide and established her as one of the most compelling artistic voices of her generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her large-scale installations have since taken that same spirit of joyful disbelief and scaled it to the architectural. Previous projects have included a full recreation of a New York flower market in Brooklyn and an extraordinary swimming pool installation in the Mojave Desert. Flower Market Hong Kong will be her first major project in Asia \u2014 and, given the city’s setting, arguably her most spectacular stage yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Two works in the installation were designed exclusively for Hong Kong and are well worth seeking out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Henderson Flower<\/strong> was created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Henderson Land, the Hong Kong property group that is presenting the installation. Look out for its connection to The Henderson, the group’s striking Central tower \u2014 a building whose beautiful petal-inspired design, created by the celebrated Zaha Hadid Architects, is already one of the most distinctive sights on the Hong Kong skyline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Bauhinia<\/strong> is perhaps the most moving piece in the entire installation. The Bauhinia flower is Hong Kong’s emblem \u2014 its symbol, its signature, the image that appears on the city’s flag \u2014 and to see it rendered here, at enormous scale, in CJ Hendry’s signature plush style, is one of those experiences that reminds you why art, at its best, can say things that words alone cannot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the most appealing things about Flower Market is that it genuinely works for everyone. The installation is tactile and colourful in ways that delight younger children; it is visually sophisticated in ways that reward older visitors and keen photographers; and it occupies a physical space \u2014 the Central Harbourfront, with Victoria Harbour as its backdrop \u2014 that is among the most beautiful urban settings in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For families travelling with children, a few things are worth knowing. The harbourfront location is flat and very easy to navigate. The walk from the MTR is short and straightforward. The greenhouse pavilion is contained, which makes keeping track of small explorers considerably easier than you might fear. And the complimentary flower that every visitor receives on the way out is, in the experience of those who have attended previous editions, a moment that younger visitors tend to remember for rather a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Flower Market runs during Hong Kong Art Month, the annual period in March when the city becomes one of the world’s most concentrated hubs of contemporary art activity. Art Basel Hong Kong \u2014 one of the world’s leading art fairs \u2014 runs at the same time, and galleries across the city mount their most ambitious exhibitions of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For visitors making the most of a Hong Kong stopover or short stay, the Central Harbourfront is an ideal base for a day’s exploration. The promenade offers some of the city’s finest harbour views. The historic streets of Central and Sheung Wan are within easy walking distance, with excellent restaurants, caf\u00e9s and independent shops at every turn. The Peak Tram, the Star Ferry and the city’s extraordinary network of elevated walkways are all easily accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hong Kong, it bears saying, is one of the great cities for walking \u2014 endlessly layered, endlessly surprising, and at its most rewarding when explored at a pace that allows its details to reveal themselves.
